About our approach:

Learning to play a musical instrument takes dedication and hard, consistent work.  For many students, the thrill of learning to play an instrument is quickly replaced by the realization that it is going to take time and considerable energy.  Semi-private instruction coupled with an ensemble experience is designed to equip the student with proficiency skills that will be the basis for a lifetime of musical pleasure. Placing the student with others of the same skill level will enhance and support the learning process.  This approach encourages student interaction and reinforces the principles and concepts being taught.  The students consequently improve their own learning “processes” with the result of deeper understanding and greater skill.

GOALS:

MUSICAL LITERACY – the knowledge and skills to understand the elements of music…to analyze, sight-read, improvise, transpose, harmonize and play music.

MUSICAL CREATIVITY– using the “literacy tools” to make one’s own music.

MUSICAL ENJOYMENT– understanding and having creative enjoyment of their instrument…the basis for a lifetime of pleasure with music.

EXPECTATIONS:

It is expected that students are taking lessons because they desire to become excellent musicians.  This School of Music is intended for students serious about this “path to excellence” called lessons. Therefore, it is expected that students will practice diligently and attend every lesson very well prepared.  Anything less is a waste of the students time and money.

POLICIES:

1.Your lesson will consist mainly of performing and analyzing repertoire.  It will also focus on the musical fundamentals, such as; harmonization, improvisation, sight-reading, transposition, technique, ear training, and more.

2.The registration fee, which is not refundable, must be paid at the time of registration to reserve the lesson time for the student.  It covers the cost of classroom supplies and teaching aids, needed for the coming year.  The tuition fee is due at the beginning of the year.  (Payment options are available.)  Music will be billed as needed by the student.

3.Students will be charged for all lessons offered whether taken or missed.  The student may make up one absence during each 10 week term.  Special circumstances, such as extended illness, will be dealt with on an individual basis.

4.It is very important that there be close contact between parent and teacher.  Please call whenever any questions or problems arise, no matter how small.

5.It will greatly help the student’s progress if parents will be involved in the following ways:

a.Set up a daily practice time the entire family respects.  In most households, it is usually best if this is a regular time each day, and at a time when the student will not be interrupted.

b.Check and sign the weekly assignment sheet.  This indicates to your child that you are concerned with their progress.

c.Attend all programs in which your child performs.

d.Encourage your child, by showing an active interest in the music being played, by expressing appreciation and admiration for their efforts and by praising them for improvements and achievements.

e.Provide a pleasant surrounding for practice.

f.Check at least one day before the lesson to see that any written work is completed.

It is our desire to see every child succeed.  However, we reserve the right to discontinue any student, after consultation with the parents, when it would be advisable for the welfare of the child or the group .

The Grace Community School of Music is a full school-year program consisting of thirty (30) lessons.  The tuition fee is $750.00.  Weekly lessons are one hour in length and each lesson has two parts …

... a semi-private/small group lesson and

an ensemble experience.

There is a $30.00 Application/Registration fee, which is non-refundable.
